Embracing my style midlife

If you were to look back at the evolution of my style, (and I'm guessing you could do the same with yours too), you would be able to divide it into distinguishable categories.

1- the beginning: the time where I just wore colourful Russel Brand shorts/sweaters/sweaters. It was the matching set of the 90s.

2- the survival: the time where I wore cheaply made professional clothing because it was all I could afford on starting teacher's salary. AKA the Ricki's/Suzy Shier era.

3- the reckoning or the Motherhood fog zone: where messy kids required daily costume changes (read multiple) into a variation of leggings and or sweatsuits.

4- the awakening. Here I am. Like most facets in life, I'm trying to figure out who I am and how what I wear is representative of me.

Life and style. They do go together and serve as the friendly postcard reminder of what you send out into the world on the daily. I've been working at deconstructing my wardrobe and finding pieces that truly represents me.

Here are the ways I have been working through this:

ASSESS...REFLECT.

I've started by taking a good look at my current wardrobe. I've pulled out pieces that no longer resonate with me or that I haven’t worn in a while/don't fit. The key is to focus on what makes you feel confident and comfortable. This process isn’t just about decluttering; it’s about rediscovering what you truly love and aligning your wardrobe with your personal identity. We will be opening up our closet sales to our community in the new year, so hang on to those pieces if you want to try to sell them!

INVEST in YOURSELF

As I refine my style, I am more keen to invest in classic, high-quality pieces that stand the test of time. Picture many jackets (oops), well-fitting jeans (fave brands are KUT and Mother), and versatile dresses. Just kidding. I don't wear dresses, cue the closet sale. These staples can be mixed and matched for various occasions, allowing for a more cohesive wardrobe. Quality over quantity will not only elevate your style but also save you money in the long run.

PLAY PLAY PLAY

Accessories are a fantastic way to express your individuality without committing to an entire outfit overhaul. Experiment with statement jewelry, scarves, hats, or bags that reflect your personality. OR SHOES. Feet never feel bloated, well not that often anyway.

PRIORITIZE your LIFE & STYLE

I'm not buying dresses anymore because I won't wear them on the day to day. Except let's ignore the fact that I just bought a cute one this weekend. Starting now. I am not buying dresses anymore because they aren't practical to my life and style.

Your style should reflect not just who you are but also how you feel. Comfort becomes increasingly important as we age, so prioritize fabrics and cuts that allow you to move freely and feel good. Also they should have pockets for your protein snacks. When you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing, it shows!

Your personal style is ever-evolving and you shouldn't feel like you're stuck in a box of something you have to wear. Have some fun, play around with textures and shapes and see if there's something out there you may love. Join me on the CLTHD instagram stories on Mondays...I'm having fun recreating some of my old fashion outfits that I've been capturing since 2013.

Embracing my personal style in my 40s is about celebrating my individuality and confidence. By assessing my wardrobe, investing in timeless pieces, experimenting with accessories, trying new trends, and prioritizing comfort, you can create a style that truly represents who you are. Remember, the best outfit you can wear is one that reflects your authentic self. So go out there, have fun with fashion, and let your style shine!
